Are You Pregnant? Pregnancy Signs & Symptoms

Posted by on February 28, 2011 at 9:51 pm in Pregnancy Articles

Pregnancy comes with many signs and symptoms. For many women they will only experience a small proportion, while for others they won’t experience any at all. Although signs and symptoms can give you a good indication that you are pregnant, most women know deep down inside them that something has changed and this change can be enough for them to know. Of course though to be completely sure you should take a pregnancy test or see your Doctor.

For some mothers, pregnancy symptoms can begin immediately after conception. Usually signs will start popping up when your baby implants after ovulation. When your baby implants it causes an increase in progesterone levels. This can cause a temperature rise and if it remains high for 15 or more days after ovulation then it can be a very early sign of pregnancy. Some women may experience a temperature drop at implantation instead. Some women also experience implantation bleeding and this can be brown, red or pink in color. Further more some women experience slight cramping.

Using a pregnancy test will, in most cases, give you a strong indication of pregnancy. A pregnancy test measures the pregnancy hormone hCG in your urine. Some tests are super sensitive and can tell you if you are pregnant as little as four days after your period is due. Most tests you have to wait 10 days after your period is due. In some cases the test maybe negative but you are in fact pregnancy. If you have tested yourself early on, wait until 14 days after ovulation and test again and it is much more accurate. If you feel the test is wrong seeing your Doctor is a good idea. They can give you a blood serum test which is much more accurate and sensitive as they can detect very low levels of hCG.

Other symptoms of pregnancy include a missed period (which is the first symptom women notice), frequent urination, morning sickness, breast changes, cravings, body changes, and fatigue and smell/food aversions.

Despite a missed period, many women experience breast tenderness early on and this can be one of the first indications of pregnancy. Breast tenderness can also be a sign of an impending period, but breast tenderness in relation to pregnancy is more intense. You will find that your breasts are much more tender and there will be a clear indication compared to tenderness from an impending period.

Many women find that they frequently need to urinate. This symptom is very common and is also a problem for women in the third trimester when baby is pressing down on their bladder.

Morning sickness of course is another symptom – one many women dread! It can start as early as 2 to 4 weeks after conception but many women experience is around the 9th or 10th week. Despite being called morning sickness, many women experience sickness and various different times of the day and it can be different each day or every week. Typically it will be worse during the first trimester and ease off in the second and third, however for some sickness can be bad throughout.

Food and smell aversions can also be fairly common. Some women find that smells they were ok with can suddenly cause them to feel nauseous or even be sick. Cravings are also experienced in about 85% of women.

Fatigue can also be a symptom and many women feel completely wiped out from their normal routines. This usually is overcome after the first trimester, but rest is important.

Lastly it is worth acknowledging intuition. Many women just know that they are pregnant or that something is different. It is hard to explain exactly what this feels like but it is something that is very real and that can be experienced before or after symptoms are apparent.

Despite the symptoms described here there are many less common symptoms. If you feel you are pregnant take a test or go to the Doctors and get it confirmed.

pregnant, pregnancy,Don’t tell me I have to see a doctor!

Posted by on February 26, 2011 at 12:01 am in Pregnancy Articles

Pregnancy can vary from one mum to be to another.Imagine being pregnant and not knowing it.Is it possible to really be pregnant carrying a baby yet having no side effects of pregnancy at all? yes it is.The perfect pregnancy, no morning sickness,no tiredness,no swollen ankles, no backache.

The perfect birth after being pregnant for 40 weeks.A birth that lasts a few hours,no strong pain during the first and second stage or labour and then receiving no pain medication during delivery.

This is the best pregnancy you could ever wish for,But think again all pregnancies differ even if this is your second pregnancy. If you have an underlying medical condition this is the first cause for concern for a pregnant woman.Pregnant with multiples is another risk during  pregnancy.

The need to get help during a pregnancy is very important. On a very rare ocassion such as a missed birth control pill or no other form of contraception during a cource of antibiotics puts you in a possition of getting pregnant easily. If a mum has light periods she could be pregnant and not know it, if spotting continues through the pregnancy so it is important that once you develop pregnancy symptoms you visit your doctor in the first instance.

Seeing a Midwife during pregnancy lets you know that all is progressing well or if any problems arrise you can delivery your baby knowing the medical team are made aware early on and are prepared for any concern.

Foods To Eat When Pregnant & The Essential Pregnancy Diet

Posted by on February 25, 2011 at 12:28 am in Pregnancy Articles

Now that you have a new life growing inside you, you must pay careful attention to what foods to eat when pregnant. Your pregnancy diet has a large effect on the healthy growth and development of your baby.

Now that you are pregnant, how must your diet change? If you are used to a healthy diet every day, there isn’t really that much to change when talking about foods to eat when pregnant. There will only be a few minor changes needed to meet the special nutritional needs of you and your baby. In fact, a pregnant woman only needs 300 more calories a day than needed pre-pregnancy. This means that an average pregnant woman should take in 2,500 to 2,700 calories a day – all of which should come from healthy foods. What you must pay attention to is your intake of extra vitamins, minerals and other nutrients through a variety of food sources. You must make sure that you get your daily supplementation through prenatal vitamins and healthy foods from the basic food groups.

What other nutrients do you need in your pregnancy diet? When you choose which foods to eat when pregnant, make sure that you are getting enough of the following very important pregnancy nutrients:

Folic Acid – You need at least 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid in order to prevent birth defects. Folic acid is a B vitamin that prevents defects in your baby’s spine and brain, and can also prevent cleft lip and congenital heart disease. The easiest way to get enough folic acid is to take it through your prenatal vitamins. Alternatively, breakfast cereals, spinach, legumes and orange juice are also good sources of folic acid.

Iron – You need to double your intake of iron when pregnant – you need 30 mg per day. You can get your required iron through an iron supplement, which your doctor should be able to recommend. Pregnant women need extra iron due to the increased amount of blood in the body and to supply the needs of the baby. Rich iron sources include red meat, fish, poultry, whole grain breads and iron-fortified cereals.

Calcium – Another of the important foods to eat when pregnant include non-fat and low-fat milk, cheese, yogurt and other sources rich in calcium. Pregnant women need at least 1,000 mg of calcium a day (young pregnant women need 1300 mg a day). Getting enough calcium is important for the proper development of your baby’s bones and teeth.

Knowing the right foods to eat when pregnant can go a long way in making sure that you and your child stay healthy throughout the pregnancy. It is also the best way to prevent possible congenital problems for your baby.

Exercises For Pregnant Women

Posted by on February 24, 2011 at 4:46 am in Pregnancy Articles

Exercises for pregnant women

If you were to see a pregnant woman exercising in your gym, would you be shocked or would you barely notice her The response from many people is surprise. Isn’t it harmful for the baby The truth is; pregnant women can exercise and should exercise throughout their pregnancy. They just need to take certain precautions. For instance, when performing aerobics, a pregnant woman’s heartrate should never go above 130-140 beats per minute. If it does, you need to cool down. It is dangerous to your baby for you to overheat. A pregnant woman also needs to concentrate on her breathing. If you need to hold your breath when doing something, then you are doing too much and are over-exerting yourself.

If you have been exercising both with weights and aerobics, you can continue to do so in moderation. But if you have not been exercising, it is not recommended that you begin a new program. If your doctor feels it is alright, then use light or no weights and keep aerobics to just walking.

The following exercises mentioned are designed for pregnant women who have been exercising prior to becoming pregnant. It can be modified for beginners, but it is recommended that a trainer advises and helps out.

By exercising throughout your pregnancy, you are helping yourself to a better, healthier life and a less intense labor experience.

WORKOUT TIPS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

1. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. Your baby needs the fluids.

2. Remember to breathe. If you hold your breath for more than a few seconds, you are doing too much and your baby loses precious oxygen.

3. After the first trimester, do NOT do any exercises that require you to be on your back. It puts too much pressure on your organs and the growing fetus.

4. Do NOT perform squats. It can cause the separation of the placenta from the uterus.

5. Perform each exercise slow and fluidly. Do not make any jerky movements.

GOOD EXERCISES FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

1. Any sitting exercise machine. Such as;

lat pulldown (back)

cable curls (biceps)

lateral raise (shoulders)

triceps extensions

leg extensions (quadriceps)

seated leg curl (hamstrings)

seated calf raise

cable crossovers (chest)

2. Use low weight with high reps. Try to perform between 12-15 repetitions in 2-3 sets each. If the last few reps are difficult, you will need to lower the weight.

3. It is not a good idea to do abdominal work after the first trimester. Especially on your back.

Having Some Fertility Difficulties, one Miscarriage and at the moment Pregnant and Scared – A few Words of Wisdom For You

Posted by on February 23, 2011 at 6:14 am in Pregnancy Articles

I have never had a regular menstrual cycle which, of course, makes getting pregnant difficult. I never worried about it to much as I always felt that if I was to have children I would. A couple of years ago I had a sudo-pregnancy. I say that because when I had my first prenatal visit, it was discovered that I had sac that measured 9 weeks, but there was no baby. I was more devastated than I thought I would be. I had to have a D&C which made me feel like I was killing something I should love, despite the fact that there was no baby. My brain kept irrationally telling me that maybe the doctor was wrong and there was a baby there and now I was killing it. I was really messed up more than most people realized at that point. That was about two years ago and I haven’t been pregnant since…until now.

I just discovered that I am about six weeks pregnant and I am terrified. What if this pregnancy is like the last? What if there is no baby? What is wrong with me? What if there is a baby and I miscarry? Why can my sister who leads a much unhealthier life style than I do manage to have four beautiful healthy children and I can’t get past 10 weeks with a pregnancy?

My fears and questions are irrational and don’t have answers. I don’t expect them. What will happen will happen I will do the best I can to make things go well and the rest is up to God, or fate, or nature, or whatever has control of these things.

I guess what I’m really looking for is a vent and maybe a few helpful words. If you want to tell me that my questions are crazy and irrational that’s fine I know they are, but remember that fear is irrational. We can’t control what brings it on we can only control how we deal with it. Telling me not to worry is like telling the sun not to shine, but tho’ it may not stop my worries it might make me feel a little better. Please be kind.

I’m so sorry. But congrats on your pregnancy! i had a miscarriage last year and now have a healthy happy 6 month old son.

You are completely justified in having concerns and questioning everything. I did too. Just relax and enjoy what you are going through. Don’t stress yourself out. Everything will work out. I suggest you get into the doctor ASAP. My doctor’s office refused to see me until i was 10 weeks pregnant in my second pregnancy. I called everyday as soon as i found out i was pregnant and told them i was worried and had to have an ultrasound ASAP. They fit me in as soon as they could. I suggest you just call your doctor and tell them your concerns.

If you are struggling to get pregnant, then I suggest you try out this very good natural infertility cure guide that has been helping thousands of women round the world teaching them some unique infertility cure tips and recommendations so they can enhance their chances of getting pregnant. The effects of drinking alcohol while pregnant, after pregnancy and while breastfeeding

Posted by on February 22, 2011 at 6:01 am in Pregnancy Articles

Pregnancy is a wonderful phenomenon for the women. The feelings of becoming a mother are exciting, ecstatic and unique and can barely be described in words. Every pregnant woman dreams for a healthy baby at the end of her laborious journey of nine months. But most of them remain unaware about the reasons for which a healthy baby may not be born, or worst, they may end up in a miscarriage or stillbirth.

Drinking is one such thing that can cause adverse effects during the pregnancy. While some suggest that little drinking may not have any effect, most of the doctors and physicians prohibit drinking during and after pregnancy till the period of breastfeeding.

A variety of physical or mental defects observed/diagnosed amongst newborns originate from a mother who drinks during pregnancy. Doctors term these defects as FASDs (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders). Surveys reveal a shocking 40,000 FASD affected babies per year in the U.S. alone. The U.S. government health and pregnancy related statistics also reveal the fact that approx 8.3% (one in twelve) women drink during their pregnancy while 3.3% women (one in thirty) are reported to be binge drinkers.

No amount of alcohol intake could be ascertained as safe for pregnant women. Whatever is being taken by a woman passes to the fetus through the placenta. This very phenomenon makes the picture clear. A drinking mother would harm her would be born baby with slightest amount of alcohol intake. The process of alcohol’s breaking up is much slower and difficult for the growing baby and as such, it remains for more time in its blood. This hinders the normal growth and the child, if is born alive, may have a wide range of physical, mental or behavioral problems. Such physical, mental or behavioral problems may include mental retardation, emotional instability, behavioral abnormality, deformed face, heart, brain or other limbs etc. The most serious defect a child can have from his/her drinking mother is a combination of physical and mental disorder, something which medical science terms as FAS or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Very unfortunately, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that about 16.6% (one thousand in every six thousands) babies are born with FAS.

Alcohol intake during pregnancy increases the chances of premature birth and miscarriages. This is most probably for the fact that alcohol interrupts with the peculiar metabolism of a pregnant woman and adversely affects the hormonal activities during the period of pregnancy. A study carried out on stillbirths in the U.S. also revealed that the chances of stillbirth are distinctly higher amongst women who drink during pregnancy.

Starting to drink immediately after pregnancy period is also not safe. A woman’s body chemistry undergoes certain changes after she has given birth to a baby. Alcohol severely affects the metabolism of a woman following childbirth. Moreover, it is also not suggested due to the nursing/breastfeeding needs for the baby. Some amount of alcohol passes through the milk to the baby and may cause some of the FAS disorders.

Pregnant women are therefore strongly suggested to refrain from drinking alcohol from the moment they ascertain their pregnancy till the end of the breastfeeding period to have a healthy baby born and growing while remaining healthy themselves.

Weight Gain While Pregnant – The Unglamorous Part of Being Pregnant

Posted by on February 20, 2011 at 9:18 pm in Pregnancy Articles

Let’s admit it; one of the biggest drags about having a baby is weight gain while pregnant. It seems like Mother Nature has “stacked the deck” against us. Between the ridiculous food cravings and feeling dog-tired all the time precisely how are we supposed to steer clear of packing on the pregnancy pounds? After all, with the exception of these genetic freaks that seem to be skinnier than before they got pregnant and appear like a super model after they deliver their baby, the rest of us wind up giving the impression of the Good Year blimp.

Well, the good thing is that pregnancy and putting on weight do not really have to go hand in hand. It is easy to look great during pregnancy, maybe not super model good looking, yet we are able to maintain some semblance of normal weight by way of dieting and exercise to avoid packing on too many pregnancy pounds. Diet and exercise you say? But I could not even keep a good diet and exercise plan going before I got pregnant! That is ok. Imagine, now you have got additional inspiration to follow along with a good dieting and exercise regimen when pregnant. You are not just doing it for yourself, you are doing it for that little baby growing inside of you.

Why don’t we look at diet first. And, no, I don’t mean dieting as in the latest dietary fads. I am talking about what sorts of foods you eat and how much of it you eat. Numerous expectant women sit on the couch like the Queen of Sheeba eating whatever they’re able to get into their mouths. Yes I’m speaking about those dreadful cravings. Pickles, Ice Cream, Taco Bell, deep fried Twinkies, you name it and expectant women have craved it.

As hard as it might seem to be, it is possible to avoid these cravings with a little self control. If you want some inspiration, be aware that gaining excessive weight while pregnant could hurt your child. Research has demonstrated that women who experience too much weight gain during pregnancy have high risk for gestational diabetes. You don’t have to completely avoid the foods you desire, just have a little self control. Desire ice cream? Have a regular sized bowl; you don’t have to inhale the whole half gallon. Eat a sensible diet made up of different types of foods to obtain all your nutrients. You truly need not eat a lot more than you did prior to getting pregnant. “But I am eating for two” you say? Research shows that expecting mothers only need to consume about 300 additional calories each day to give their baby an appropriate quantity of nutrition.

So far as exercising goes it is safe and healthful to workout in pregnancy. The benefits are numerous and all good. From a healthier baby, to an easier pregnancy and delivery it is just a great idea to be involved in some type of physical exercise when expecting to avoid too much weight gain during pregnancy. There are plenty of pregnancy fitness programs out there. They’ll help motivate you and guide you through an exercise program that is made up of exercises properly customized to help not simply prevent weight gain while pregnant but to actually allow you to look wonderful and feel great.
